FOOD LABEL QA

Catch food label mistakes before artwork release

The most expensive label error is often a process failure: the artwork, formula, supplier file, nutrition calculation, and marketing copy describe different product versions. A useful preflight therefore checks evidence and change control as well as visible wording.

Why this review needs product evidence

Food labels combine data from formulation, procurement, quality, regulatory, packaging, and marketing teams. Each team can be correct about its own draft while the assembled package is wrong. Review the final-size, production-intent package against one approved source packet.

Recommended review sequence

  1. Confirm that the artwork SKU, recipe revision, supplier specifications, and package size are the same release version.
  2. Recalculate serving and Nutrition Facts data after formulation, yield, or package changes.
  3. Expand compound ingredients and reconcile the complete allergen matrix.
  4. Measure the principal display panel and verify identity and net quantity presentation.
  5. Inventory claims across packaging, websites, ads, marketplaces, and retailer data feeds.
  6. Confirm FDA or USDA FSIS jurisdiction and record unresolved federal, state, import, and product-specific questions.

Evidence to keep with the released label

Use a release checklist that names the file version, owner, evidence source, finding, disposition, and date. Require a second comparison between the approved proof and assembled package. Preserve rejected drafts so teams can see which wording must not return in a later revision.

What the pre-check cannot prove

Red flags include copied panels, stale addresses, mismatched serving sizes, incomplete sub-ingredients, missing sesame review, unsupported front-of-pack claims, and a quantity statement sized for another container. A clean OCR result is not proof that the formula, calculation, or regulatory decision behind the text is correct.

Automatic extraction is accepted only when required text is present in two OCR passes, image quality and layout evidence meet the configured threshold, and the submitted product facts agree with the recognized text. Otherwise the upload is rejected for clearer, complete panels. This does not establish population-wide OCR accuracy or regulatory compliance.
