FOOD NET QUANTITY

Check net quantity against the package and fill specification

The net quantity declaration connects the printed label to the actual amount of food in the package. Review the declaration on the principal display panel using the final container, display-area calculation, fill specification, and applicable U.S. customary and metric presentation.

Why this review needs product evidence

Artwork can contain the correct number but still need revision because of units, location, type size, separation, contrast, or inconsistency with the production fill target. Packages with drained weight, multiple units, or variable-weight sale need product-specific analysis rather than a generic label template.

Recommended review sequence

  1. Identify what quantity is being declared and whether weight, fluid measure, count, drained weight, or another basis applies.
  2. Measure the actual principal display panel and retain the calculation used for presentation requirements.
  3. Compare the declared amount and units with the manufacturing fill specification and inspection method.
  4. Review placement in the lower portion of the principal display panel, surrounding text, contrast, and readability at final size.
  5. Check U.S. customary and metric expressions, abbreviations, spacing, and conversions.
  6. Inspect the assembled package and every retail-facing panel before release.

Evidence to keep with the released label

Keep package drawings, panel measurements, fill targets and tolerances, unit conversions, inspection or quality-control records, final-size artwork, and an assembled-package photograph. Link the evidence to the exact SKU and package size; a quantity review for one pack size does not automatically cover another.

What the pre-check cannot prove

Common problems include reviewing only the numeric fill target, using nominal volume for a product sold by weight, copying the type size from another package, or hiding the declaration in a crowded panel. OCR can compare detected text with submitted facts, but it cannot measure the physical display panel from a cropped image.

Automatic extraction is accepted only when required text is present in two OCR passes, image quality and layout evidence meet the configured threshold, and the submitted product facts agree with the recognized text. Otherwise the upload is rejected for clearer, complete panels. This does not establish population-wide OCR accuracy or regulatory compliance.
